It turns out Melissa has become Eve for unknown reasons and is once again bent on giving birth to the ultimate being, only this time she has learned from her mistakes and is attempting to get an artificial sperm sample that lack mitochondria to rebel against her’s like last time. Things are going well until suddenly…everyone bursts into flames except Aya and the opera’s lead, Melissa. It is Christmas Eve 1997 in New York City and a new member of the NYPD, Aya Brea, takes her date to see an opera at Carnegie Hall.

This game serves as the sequel to the novel and has a fairly similar plot, just on a much bigger scale. It was released on Playstation Network and garnered two sequels Parasite Eve II which came out two years later and The 3rd Birthday, which was released for the PSP. The development team for the game consisted of both Japanese and American members, with a large portion of development taking place in America. It served as a sequel to the novel and was advertised as the “cinematic RPG”. Parasite Eve – the video game – was released by Square in 1998 and was their first game to be rated M for Mature. It then merges with Toshiaki and both are no more. However, the male mitochondria (from Toshiaki’s sperm) rebel against the female mitochondria and take it over. She then implants her fertilized egg into Mariko as she dies and the ultimate being is immediately born. The cells that Toshiaki cultured take on the form of Kiyomi and, um… acquire some of his sperm. No one knows however, that Kiyomi’s mitochondria underwent a mutation, becoming Eve, and that everything that is going on is all a part of Eve’s plan to gain a body and give birth to the ultimate being, creating a new era of mitochondrial-dominant life-forms. Toshiaki also desires to culture his wife’s liver cells to keep her memory alive.

As an organ donation, her kidney gets transplanted into a teenage girl named Mariko. In the beginning, a woman named Kiyomi, the wife of Pharmacologist Toshiaki, gets in a car accident and ends up brain-dead. Eve has been waiting thousands of years for the right conditions when mitochondrial life can achieve its true potential and take over from eukaryotic life-forms by causing a child to be born that can control its own genetic code. The story suggests that the mitochondria in cells all descend from a single woman in Africa dubbed Mitochondrial Eve (look it up) and that this being is made up of all mitochondria in the cells of humans and animals. Parasite Eve was originally a Japanese horror science fiction novel that came out in 1995 and was released in the US in 2005.
